Medicare Part D (Prescription Coverage)

As of January 1, 2006, Medicare implemented what is known as “Part D”, which is a prescription drug coverage program. This is a voluntary program for anyone who receives Medicare because of age eligibility (age 65 or older) or because of end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Enrollment for Medicare drug plans is open every year between November 15 - DEcember 31. You can also switch your drug plan during this time period.

You can use http://www.medicare.gov/ to compare health plans or you can call your state's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). In North Carolina the toll-free number is: 1-800-443-9354. SHIP can help you choose a drug plan that best meets your needs based on coverage, cost, and convenience.
