In today’s fragmented health care system, states have taken it upon themselves to create and enact policies to help preserve and protect the health of their citizens. Federal policymaking often gets the limelight, but states are also working hard with limited resources to control health care costs, increase coverage for those most at need, and ensure comprehensive, affordable health care. State policies and programs are important to study because if they prove successful, they are often adopted by other states and can be treated as pilot or demonstration programs by the federal government.
