Dr. Mottl's research has involved investigation of genetic and epidemiologic risk factors of chronic kidney disease, with an emphasis on diabetic kidney disease. She is especially interested in pathogenic mechanisms of diabetic nephropathy and how these may vary between those with and without proteinuria. Currently, she is studying whether findings of diabetic retinopathy correlate with different pathogenic and clinical manifestations of diabetic kidney disease. Her long-term goal is to elucidate pathogenic mechanisms in diabetic microvascular complications for the purpose of targeting novel therapies.
